Age relaxation is extra years added to the upper age limit of a government job. It lets you apply even if you are older than the limit printed in the advertisement.
Every candidate for a federal post gets 5 years automatically. On top of that, you can claim one more relaxation if you fit a category: 3, 5, 10 or 15 years. Punjab gives men 5 years and women 8 years automatically.
This guide covers the federal and provincial rules, who qualifies, what proof you need, and how to work out your age on the closing date.
Age Limit and Age Relaxation at a Glance#
| Commission | General age limit | General relaxation |
|---|---|---|
| FPSC (federal) | 18 to 30 years | 5 years for every candidate, automatic |
| PPSC (Punjab) | 18 to 35 years for most posts | 5 years for men, 8 years for women, automatic |
| SPSC (Sindh) | 18 to 35 years | Up to 5 years blanket relaxation to 31 Dec 2026 |
| BPSC (Balochistan) | 18 to 40 years | Check the advertisement |
| CSS (competitive exam) | 21 to 30 years | 2 years only, maximum age 32 |
Age limits vary per advertisement. Always check the official notification. Your age is counted on the closing date of the advertisement, not on the test date or the interview date.

What Is Age Relaxation in Government Jobs?#
Age relaxation is an addition to the upper age limit of a post, granted by the rules to certain candidates. If a post’s upper age limit is 30 and you get 5 years of relaxation, you can apply up to age 35.
The relaxation does not change the minimum age. You must still be at least 18, or 21 for CSS and PMS, on the closing date. It only lifts the upper limit.
Government jobs in Pakistan grant relaxation under rules made by the Establishment Division for federal posts and by each province for provincial posts. The advertisement states the limit and the relaxation that applies to that post.
Who Gets Age Relaxation for Federal Jobs (FPSC)?#
Every candidate for an FPSC post gets 5 years of general age relaxation on the upper age limit. It is automatic. You do not apply for it.
The rule comes from the Initial Appointment to Civil Posts (Relaxation of Upper Age Limit) Rules, 1993. In a memo dated 24 June 2010, the Establishment Division told federal ministries to show the 5 years in their adverts.
FPSC’s General Instructions, updated on 12 August 2026, list underage and overage among the main grounds for rejection. Read the age line in the advert carefully. Some adverts print the limit with the 5 years already added. Others state the base limit and mention the relaxation separately. If the advert is unclear, read the post’s recruitment rules or ask FPSC before you pay the fee.
On top of the 5 years, you can claim one more relaxation if you fit a category. You can use only one category, plus the general 5 years. If you fit two categories, pick the one that gives more years and send proof for it with your application.
| Category | Extra years | Proof FPSC asks for |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled Castes, Buddhist community, recognised tribes of the Tribal Areas, Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan | 3 years | Certificate from the Political Agent or the District Coordination Officer of the area |
| Serving government employees, including contract staff, with 2 years of continuous service | 10 years, up to age 55 | Service record and Departmental Permission Certificate |
| Retired or released armed forces officers and personnel | 15 years, or the years actually served if fewer | Discharge or service papers |
| Widow, son or daughter of a federal civil servant who died in service | 5 years | Proof of the death in service and the relationship |
The 3-year concession is only for permanent residents of those areas. Living in Gilgit for work does not count. You must belong there and have the certificate to show it. Our domicile guide explains how to get the domicile certificate that proves where you belong.
Serving Government Employees Get 10 Years#
A government servant, including a contract employee, gets 10 extra years if they have 2 years of continuous government service on the closing date. The age cannot go past 55.
Staff of banks, the State Bank of Pakistan, WAPDA and autonomous bodies do not qualify. The exact words leave out employees of the nationalised banks, State Bank of Pakistan, WAPDA, other semi-government and autonomous bodies. A clerk in a federal ministry qualifies. A clerk in a state-owned bank does not.
Serving employees also need permission. Under the Government Servants (Applications for Services and Posts) Rules, 1966, you must get your department’s permission before you apply.
You enter the reference number and date of that Departmental Permission Certificate in the online form. Without it, FPSC says no admission certificate will be issued. Our how to apply guide covers the full application process.
Age Relaxation Rules in Punjab (PPSC)#
Punjab service rules set two baseline upper age limits before any relaxation is added: 25 years for BPS-1 to BPS-5 posts, and 30 years for BPS-6 and above.
Male applicants receive 5 years of automatic general age relaxation. Female applicants receive 8 years.
Special categories, disabled candidates, ex-servicemen, AJK or Gilgit-Baltistan domicile holders, and minorities, qualify for additional relaxation. The combined additional relaxation from special categories is capped at 10 years above the general male or female limit. A female applicant with a verified disability receives 8 years of female general relaxation plus 10 years of disability relaxation, setting her upper age limit at 48 years for BPS-6 and higher posts.
Regular employees with at least 2 years of continuous public service receive 5 additional years for BPS-1 to 5 posts, and 3 additional years for BPS-6 and higher posts. Age eligibility is measured on the advertisement closing date, regardless of when written tests or interviews occur.
For the Provincial Management Service (PMS) exam, the age limit is 21 to 30 years, relaxed to 35 years for federal government employees and Punjab government employees with at least 4 years of service. The Punjab Civil Servants Recruitment (Relaxation of Upper Age Limit) Rules, 1976 allow up to a 10-year relaxation in unique cases.
Age Relaxation Rules in Sindh#
Sindh has its own rules, approved by the Sindh cabinet as the Sindh Civil Servants, Relaxation of Upper Age Limit, Rules. Government servants with 2 years of continuous service are eligible for up to 5 years of relaxation, granted by the respective Administrative Department.
General candidates are entitled to up to 2 years of relaxation by the Administrative Department and up to 5 years by the Services, General Administration and Coordination Department. Widows or children of deceased civil servants are eligible for up to 5 years of relaxation. Persons with disabilities, divorced women and widows are entitled to up to 5 years of relaxation.
Sindh also has a blanket relaxation of up to 5 years beyond the maximum age limit prescribed in the appointment or recruitment rules. This relaxation applies across all departments, except for the Police and posts filled through the Combined Competitive Examination conducted by the Sindh Public Service Commission.
The blanket relaxation remains in effect for an initial period of two years, from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2026. If you are applying for a Sindh post after that date, check whether the blanket relaxation has been extended.
How to Work Out Your Age on the Closing Date#

FPSC counts your age on the closing date of the advertisement, not on the test date. It takes your date of birth from your Matric or O-Level certificate. Add the relaxations to the post’s upper limit, then compare with your age on that day.
- Find the post’s upper age limit in the advertisement or recruitment rules.
- Check whether the 5 general years are already included. If not, add them.
- Add one category relaxation if you qualify, such as 10 years for a serving employee.
- Work out your age on the closing date, using the date of birth on your Matric certificate.
- Apply only if you are within the limit. Otherwise the fee and the test are wasted.
Here is an example. A post’s recruitment rules set 30 as the upper limit. With the general 5 years, anyone up to 35 can apply. A federal ministry clerk with 3 years of service gets 10 more, so she can apply up to 45. A man of 37 with no category cannot.
If your O-Level certificate has no date of birth, FPSC accepts your school leaving certificate together with a birth certificate from a hospital or municipal committee. Our documents checklist explains what counts as proof of age and what to do if your date of birth differs between documents.
When Age Relaxation Does Not Apply#
The 1993 relaxation rules do not cover posts filled through the annual competitive examination, which is CSS. CSS has its own age rules: 21 to 30 years, with relaxation of only 2 years, up to a maximum age of 32, and age is judged on 31 December of the year preceding the exam. Do not use the 5-year or 10-year figures for CSS.
Departments recruiting for lower grades may also list extra categories that FPSC adverts do not. For federal posts in BPS-15 and below, candidates from Sindh (Rural) and Balochistan get 3 years. Disabled persons are also listed in the memo. The disabled persons employment quota is a separate right from age relaxation.
Beyond these, the Establishment Division memo says the President or Prime Minister may grant age relaxation to an individual on extreme compassionate grounds. That is rare and personal. Do not plan around it.
Common Mistakes That Get an Application Rejected#
- Counting your age on the test date. Your age is counted on the closing date. If you were overage on the closing date, you are rejected even after passing the test.
- Claiming two category relaxations. You can claim only one category, plus the general 5 years. Pick the one that gives more years.
- Adding the 5 years twice. Some adverts print the limit with the 5 years already added. Check the age line before you add them again.
- Applying as a bank, SBP or WAPDA employee for the 10-year relaxation. Employees of nationalised banks, the State Bank, WAPDA, semi-government and autonomous bodies are excluded from it.
- Applying without departmental permission. A serving employee must get the Departmental Permission Certificate before applying. Without it, FPSC says no admission certificate will be issued.
- Sending no proof for the category you claim. FPSC asks for adequate proof with the application. A claim without proof is rejected.
- Using the wrong date of birth. FPSC takes your date of birth from your Matric or O-Level certificate. If it differs from your CNIC, correct it before you apply.
- Using CSS rules for a general post, or general rules for CSS. CSS has its own age rules. Do not mix the two.
- Assuming the Sindh blanket relaxation is permanent. It runs from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2026. Check whether it has been extended before you rely on it.
- Paying the fee before checking your age. Check your eligibility, including your age on the closing date, before you pay. The fee is not refunded.
Frequently Asked Questions#
What is age relaxation in govt jobs?
Age relaxation is extra years added to the upper age limit of a government job, so you can apply even if you are older than the limit printed in the advertisement. Every candidate for a federal post gets 5 years automatically. On top of that, you can claim one more relaxation if you fit a category: 3, 5, 10 or 15 years. Punjab gives men 5 years and women 8 years automatically.
Do you claim age relaxation?
The FPSC online application form asks “Do you claim age relaxation?” Answer yes only if you fit one of the categories, such as a serving government employee, a retired armed forces person, or the family of a federal employee who died in service. The general 5 years is automatic and does not need claiming. If you answer yes, select the category and send the proof with your application.
What does “do you claim age relaxation” mean in Urdu?
It means “کیا آپ عمر میں رعایت کا دعویٰ کرتے ہیں؟” The form asks whether you are claiming extra years on the upper age limit under one of the relaxation categories. Answer yes only if you qualify for a category and can prove it. The general 5 years for every candidate is automatic and is not what the question is asking about.
What is an age relaxation certificate?
There is no single age relaxation certificate. The proof depends on the category you claim. A disabled person shows a disability certificate or a special CNIC. A government employee shows a service certificate and a Departmental Permission Certificate. A candidate from a tribal area, Azad Kashmir or Gilgit-Baltistan shows a certificate from the Political Agent or the District Coordination Officer. The family of a deceased employee shows the death certificate and proof of relationship. A retired armed forces person shows discharge or service papers.
