There is no officially prescribed new CV format in Pakistan. Templates advertised as the “latest CV format” are usually just restyled. The format Pakistani employers recognise is a two-page, single-column document with the same sections in the same order, and the one thing that changes is whether the job is government or private. This guide gives you that standard format, a filled sample, and the rules for Word and PDF.
Which CV Format Is Best for Government Jobs?#
The reverse-chronological format is best for almost every job in Pakistan, including government posts. It lists your most recent job or qualification first and works back from there. A functional format (skills first, no dates) suits fresh graduates with no work experience, and a combination format mixes skills and experience. For a government post, use the reverse-chronological format and keep it formal. Most government roles also require you to fill an official application form, not just submit a CV, so follow the format in the job advertisement. Our teaching job application guide shows how a government application letter pairs with the CV.
The Standard CV Format in Pakistan: Section by Section#

The standard Pakistan CV runs two pages, single column, in this order. One page is right only for IT and software-export roles.
| Section | What goes here |
|---|---|
| 1. Contact details | Full name (bold, 14–16 pt), active mobile number, professional email, current city, LinkedIn profile |
| 2. Personal information | Father’s name, CNIC number, date of birth, domicile (government posts; leave it off a private-sector CV) |
| 3. Career objective | Two or three lines naming the post you are applying for and what you offer |
| 4. Education | Reverse chronological: Master or Bachelor with CGPA out of 4.00, then Intermediate and Matriculation with marks and percentage |
| 5. Work experience | Most recent first: job title, company, city, month and year, then bullet points with achievements |
| 6. Certifications | B.Ed, M.Ed, ACCA, ICAP, CFA, PEC registration, or any course certificate relevant to the post |
| 7. Skills | Six to eight hard and soft skills relevant to the target job |
| 8. Languages | Urdu, English, and any other language you speak or write |
| 9. References | Two named references with designation, organisation and contact details |
| 10. Declaration | A signed declaration that the information is correct, with your name and date |
Government CV vs Private CV: What Changes?#

The format is the same. What changes is the personal information block. A government CV includes it; a private-sector CV leaves it off.
| What | Government CV | Private CV |
|---|---|---|
| Father’s name | Include, exactly as on your CNIC | Leave off |
| CNIC number | Include | Leave off unless the employer asks |
| Date of birth | Include | Leave off |
| Domicile | Include | Leave off |
| Photo | Include if the advertisement asks | Include only if asked |
| All education levels | Include Matriculation and FSc with marks | Include the levels that matter for the post |
| Exam roll number | Mention your PPSC or FPSC roll number if asked | Not applicable |
Write your name and your father’s name exactly as they appear on your CNIC. That one detail causes more real-world trouble than any other. For a private-sector CV, your CNIC number belongs only in a trusted process that explicitly requests it. Do not place CNIC numbers, religion, marital status or family details on a general CV.
How to Write Each Section#
Contact details: put your full name in bold at the very top, 14–16 pt, then your active Pakistani mobile number (e.g. +92 3XX XXXXXXX), a professional email address, your current city, and a link to your LinkedIn profile.
Career objective: two or three sentences, no more. Name the post and connect your strongest capability to it: “To apply for the post of Junior Clerk (BPS-11), using my BA degree, computer diploma and two years of record-keeping experience.”
Education: list your qualifications in reverse chronological order, most recent first. For each one give the degree title, the institute or board name, and the passing year. For a Bachelor’s or Master’s, give the CGPA out of 4.00. For Intermediate and Matriculation, give the marks obtained over the total and the percentage, because Pakistani boards report marks rather than grades and recruiters read the percentage directly.
Work experience: start with your most recent job. Give the job title, company name, city, and duration (Month Year to Month Year). Then add bullet points that start with an action and give a scope, a tool, or a measurable outcome. For fresh graduates, a strong projects section can outweigh the lack of formal experience, and for management trainee programmes education goes above experience, because they screen on institution and CGPA before a human reads a word.
Skills: list six to eight hard and soft skills relevant to the target job, such as Microsoft Office, data analysis, project management and communication. Only list skills you can demonstrate. Match your CV to the job advertisement: use the keywords and qualifications mentioned in it.
References and declaration: always include two named references with their designation, organisation and contact details. Close with a signed declaration that the information is correct, with your name and the date.

Free Word Templates and the Resume Builder#
A free Word template for this format is a two-page, single-column document with the ten sections above already laid out: contact details, personal information, career objective, education with CGPA and marks fields, work experience, certifications, skills, languages, named references, and the declaration and signature block. Free templates are available as editable Word files and PDFs with no sign-up and no credit card. The easiest route on this site is our resume builder, which builds your CV from this same structure: fill in each section and download the result. Send the CV with your job application letter, which names the post and lists your enclosures.
Word or PDF? Font, Length and File Name#
Use Arial, Calibri or Times New Roman, 10–12 pt for the body and 14–16 pt for your name. Use black text on a white background. Keep it to two pages maximum: a fresh graduate fits on one page, one to three years of experience fits on one to two pages, and five or more years fits on two pages. Build your CV with our resume builder and save it as a PDF, because a PDF looks the same on every device and does not get corrupted. Send a Word file only when the employer explicitly asks for it. Name the file with your full name, for example “Muhammad_Ali_CV_2026.pdf”, not “my_cv_final_new.pdf”.
Mistakes to Avoid#
- Using one generic CV for every post. A generic CV is easy to spot and often rejected. Change the objective, the skills and the keywords for every application.
- Leaving out Matriculation and FSc marks. Government recruiters read the percentage directly. List all four education levels with marks and percentages.
- Putting your CNIC on a private-sector CV. Your CNIC number belongs only in a trusted process that explicitly requests it.
- Listing skills you cannot demonstrate. Every skill on your CV can be tested in the interview. Leave off what you cannot show.
- Using tables, graphics and fancy icons. Job portals and applicant tracking systems parse simple, single-column CVs cleanly. Decorative layouts break the parsing.
- Sending a Word file when a PDF was asked for. A PDF preserves your formatting on every device. Send Word only when the employer asks for it.
- Spelling and grammar mistakes. A CV with mistakes is rejected before the interview stage. Proofread it, then ask someone else to read it once.
Frequently Asked Questions#
Which CV format is best for government jobs?
The reverse-chronological format is best for government jobs in Pakistan: most recent qualification or job first, working back. Use the standard two-page order (contact details, personal information, career objective, education, experience, certifications, skills, languages, references, declaration), include your father’s name, CNIC, date of birth and domicile exactly as on your CNIC, and follow the format in the job advertisement. Most government roles also require an official application form, not just a CV.
How many pages should a CV be in Pakistan?
Two pages maximum. A fresh graduate fits on one page, one to three years of experience fits on one to two pages, and five or more years fits on two pages. One page is right only for IT and software-export roles.
Should I put my CNIC on my CV?
On a government CV, yes: include your CNIC number, your father’s name, your date of birth and your domicile. On a private-sector CV, no: leave your CNIC off unless the employer explicitly asks for it. Your CNIC number belongs only in a trusted process that explicitly requests it.
Do I need a photo on my CV?
No photo unless the employer specifically asks for one. A recent passport-size photograph is optional for modern corporate roles and required for some government and public sector jobs, so check the advertisement.
Should I send my CV as a Word file or a PDF?
Send it as a PDF. A PDF looks the same on every device and does not get corrupted. Send a Word file (.docx) only when the employer explicitly asks for it. Name the file with your full name, for example “Muhammad_Ali_CV_2026.pdf”.
